Morning dew and gentle rain
Early morning glistening dewdrops, always so soft... always a good reason to get out of bed early and take a few shots. Then it comes the rain... Love the gentle rain that makes flowers grow, filling the air with smell of hot ground after a dry spell. When I was a kid it seemed that it rained for days in a row and the humidity was high, I don't miss that but I haven't seen long raining days

(By contrast, the 'average' long-stemmed rose is 28" long with a 1 1/2' bud.)Native to Ecuador, these gorgeous blooms benefit by the prolonged sunlight and cool nights they experience at their home of 9,600 feet. There is nothing else like

Those Darn Carns!
I can hear some of you grumbling right now. "Oh no! Not carnations!" But hold on. I can change your mind. I too, may have been guilty of being a carnation snob in the past, but this being a new year, I've reformed! Read on:Maybe it would help if we stopped referring to them as carnations; we'll use their Latin name, Dianthus. Right away they sound more elegant, don't they?Martha Stewart is a

Winter Blooming Cherry Tree ~ Prunus subhirtella
Happy Martin Luther King Day, originally uploaded by Abby Lanes.I visited Descanso Gardens during the winter season. I was surprised to learn, while walking through the roses, that there is a Winter Blooming Cherry Tree. Interestingly, in researching this delicate beauty, it is a difficult tree to own. You must find the perfect spot, give it meticulous care, and care for it constantly as it is

Houses by the sea level
Paraty... I love this charming colonial town and its cobblestone streets constructed by the Portuguese settlers over 300 years ago. That is where we spent our honeymoon almost 15 years ago.The full moon floods happen when the seawater invades the streets. It was pure luck that we were able to be there on vacation last week during full moon and high tides! I can't take any credit for that.Where

Fortune Cookies :)
I found a tutorial for making paper fortune cookies this weekend so I decided to give it a try. They are very easy to make! I had some take-out boxes sitting in my closet so I thought it would make a cute Valentine's Day project. I used Libby Weifenbach's "Love Shack" Kit for the papers, since it's a digital kit I just printed the papers out and used them like traditional scrapbook paper. For the

January is National Hot Tea Month!
Did you know that January is National Hot Tea Month? No? Neither did I, until recently. So I thought it would be a good time to read the tea leaves, so to speak, and see why tea is worthy of such a designation. All tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, a warm-weather evergreen. How the fresh leaves of the tea plant are processed and their level of contact with oxygen determine what type
